What is Business Insurance?
Business insurance is a broad category of coverage designed to protect your company from financial loss. It covers property damage, liability claims, employee related risks, and interruptions to your operations.
The right mix depends on your industry, your size, and how you actually run the business day to day. There’s no one policy that fits everyone. A landscaping company and a law firm need very different programs.
What Does Business Insurance Cover?
Most business insurance programs are built from a few core pieces. General liability protects against third party bodily injury or property damage claims. Property coverage protects your building, equipment, and inventory. Business income coverage replaces lost revenue if you have to shut down after a covered loss. Workers compensation covers your employees on the job. Commercial auto covers your vehicles.
From there, additional coverages get added based on your risk profile. Cyber liability, professional liability, employment practices liability, umbrella coverage. The point of an independent agent is to build the right combination for your business, not sell you a boxed product.
Should My Small Business Have Business Income Insurance?
Almost always, yes. Business income insurance replaces the revenue you’d lose if a covered loss forced you to close temporarily. Think of a fire that shuts your operation down for two months. Property coverage rebuilds the building. Business income covers the paychecks, rent, and utilities you still owe while you’re not earning.
Most small businesses cannot absorb that gap easily. It’s one of the coverages that gets overlooked most often, and one of the ones that saves the most businesses when something serious happens.
What's the Difference Between General Liability and Professional Liability?
General liability covers physical harm and physical damage. Someone slips at your office. Your delivery van scratches a customer’s fence. A stack of inventory tips over onto a visitor. That’s general liability.
Professional liability, sometimes called errors and omissions or E&O, covers claims tied to the advice or services you provide. A missed deadline that costs a client money. A design error that leads to a lawsuit. Bad advice that results in financial loss for someone who relied on it. General liability is about accidents. Professional liability is about the work itself.
Most service based businesses need both. A general contractor with employees, tools, and client contracts almost certainly needs both, plus workers comp on top.
